October is Preptober!

It’s October and in my household that means it is prep time.

NaNoWriMo prep time that is.

National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo – is an event takes place in the month of November.
The challenge is to write 50,000 words in the 30 days of November.

I have participated in NaNoWriMo for the last 7 years and have won 5 years. Winning means that I have reached the goal of 50,000 words that year.
I remember hearing about NaNoWriMo when I was in high school, but I didn’t start participating until way later in life.
As someone who has always wanted to be a writer, I was intrigued by the challenge.

The last few times that I have gone into NaNoWriMo I have not prepped very much. I have been what some would call a pantster – which means I write by the seat of my pants. No real plan at all, just sit down and write.
This year I have decided that I can’t go that way. I need to be more prepared and have a better idea of where I am going with these books and what happens next. I need to be a plotter.

I started planning in January of this year.
I have a Mead brand composition notebook that I have dedicated to what I am calling the Companion series. So far this is a series of three books that all take place within the same fantasy world with recurring characters and connected story arcs.

I have started re-building the world in which the Companion series takes place inside this notebook.
World building notes, character sketches, information about the continent and the different cities. I also have a rough outline and a much more detailed full outline of the first book.

My plan is to go into the month of November with a solid and detailed outline. By breaking down my outline into the key scenes that need to take place I will be able to avoid falling down the pit of not knowing where the story is going. If I can avoid the pit of not knowing, I will hopefully be able to keep my pace up and not have a panic filled moment of ‘Crap! What the heck am I doing!’.

One of the other things that I have been working on and something that will be a major inspiration for me this November is my world map.

The working map for my Companion Series.

I created it on an online software that was in beta mode. After they did the major release they made changes to where I could no longer update the map. So I am working on hand drawing the map for the purpose of display and inspiration over my desk. But that is a slow-going process as my artistic skill is on the sad side of things. I mean my stick figures need help.

Over the next few weeks of October, I will be posting more about how I prep for NaNoWriMo and will be sharing re-caps of some amazing NaNoWriMo themed events that I will be attending.

So share with me friends – are you up for the challenge of writing 50,000 words in 30 days? Are you willing to join me on this caffeine-infused whirlwind of words?

In honor of the fact that NaNoWriMo is just around the corner, I have decided to host a giveaway!
